Catania sits in the shadow of Mount Etna, Europe's tallest active volcano. The city is an explosive mix of black lava baroque, chaotic fish markets, insane street food and nightlife that rivals Barcelona.
Catania is Sicily's most rock-and-roll city. Its baroque downtown, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, is UNESCO-listed. La Pescheria is Italy's most epic fish market, Via Etnea is the main drag, and Etna is just 30 minutes away.
April through June and September-October are prime. Summer hits 104ยฐF but the beaches make up for it. Winter is mild โ you can even ski Etna with ocean views.
Arancini, pasta alla norma, swordfish, granita with brioche (the Sicilian breakfast), cannoli, Catanese cipollina and yes โ horse meat is a thing here. The Pescheria serves fish cooked to order.
Via Etnea for shopping and strolling. Pescheria for the legendary market. San Berillo for the nightlife scene. Ognina for seafood spots. Etna (30 min) for volcano trekking.
Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) is southern Italy's busiest hub, just 3 miles from downtown. AMT Alibus runs every 20 minutes.
