Krakow is Poland's absolute gem. A perfectly preserved medieval old town, Europe's largest market square, and nightlife that's both insanely cheap and genuinely awesome make it one of Europe's best-value destinations, period.
Krakow literally has everything: thousands of years of history, the Jewish quarter Kazimierz with hidden courtyard bars, underground jazz clubs, Auschwitz-Birkenau just an hour away, the mind-blowing Wieliczka salt mines, and hearty Polish comfort food. And everything costs roughly half of what you'd pay in Western Europe.
May through September for good weather. December for magical Christmas markets in the main square. Winter dips below 25°F but the atmosphere is incredible.
Pierogi (Polish dumplings — get every filling), żurek (tangy rye soup), obwarzanek (the local bread ring), zapiekanka (open-face baguette pizza), bigos (hunter's stew) and Polish vodka flights. Dining in Krakow is absurdly affordable.
Stare Miasto for the UNESCO old town. Kazimierz for the bar scene and nightlife. Podgórze for Schindler's Factory museum. Nowa Huta for Soviet-era architecture tours.
Balice Airport (KRK) is 20 minutes from downtown by direct train. Buses run to Auschwitz (75 min) and Wieliczka (30 min).
