Edinburgh is straight out of a Gothic fairytale. The castle looming over volcanic rock, the medieval Royal Mile, underground pubs pouring single malts and the massive August Fringe Festival make it one of Europe's most captivating capitals.
Edinburgh has two distinct personalities: the medieval Old Town with its dark mysterious closes (alleys) and the refined Georgian New Town. This is where J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter, where Sherlock Holmes was dreamed up, and where the Fringe Festival became the world's largest live performance event.
August for the Fringe Festival (book months ahead โ it's huge). May through September for decent weather. Hogmanay (Scottish New Year) is absolutely legendary.
Haggis (seriously, try it), fish and chips, Scotch pie, shortbread cookies, and obviously Scotch whisky โ do a proper distillery tour. New Town brunch game is strong.
Royal Mile for history overload. Grassmarket for the pub scene. Stockbridge for bohemian cafรฉ culture. Leith for restaurants and the waterfront. New Town for stunning Georgian architecture.
Edinburgh Airport (EDI) is 30 minutes from the city center by tram. Waverley Station is the main train station right in the heart of town.
