Madrid never sleeps. Spain's capital is packed with world-class art (Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen), insane tapas, gorgeous royal parks and a nightlife scene that doesn't even start until midnight. It's generous, chaotic and completely addictive.
Madrid is hands-down Europe's nightlife capital. The neighborhoods of Malasaña, Chueca and La Latina have bars, markets and street life going at all hours. Retiro Park is Madrid's Central Park, Gran Vía is its Broadway, and Mercado de San Miguel is foodie heaven.
Spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) are ideal. Summer hits 104°F — brutal. Winter is cold but sunny.
Tapas are life here: tortilla española, patatas bravas, jamón ibérico, croquetas, fried calamari rings and the iconic bocadillo de calamares. Cocido madrileño stew in winter. Hit La Latina on Sundays for the Rastro flea market and cold cañas.
La Latina for tapas and the Rastro. Malasaña for hipster hangouts. Chueca for LGBTQ+ nightlife. Salamanca for high-end shopping. Lavapiés for multicultural eats.
Barajas Airport (MAD) connects downtown via metro line 8 in 30 minutes or the Express bus in 40. Atocha station runs AVE bullet trains to all of Spain.
